Is the name painted on or is it vinyl lettering? If it is vinyl lettering you can remove it by using a hair dryer and a plastic scraper. If you can't get the name off by that method you may have to take your boat to a company that specializes in the removal of old names. It may be more expensive but at least you won't be able to see the old name once it's finished.
