The last few years we've went to the annual Salmon Derby in Owen Sound. It's a well-sponsored event with prizes and nightly events in the huge tent that also serves as the dining area. Even people who don't fish the derby come and line up to get the salmon dinner that's served by the local groups.

Have you been to derbies like this in your area?

We had a King Salmon Derby at the Wrangell Chamber of Commerce last year at the first week of May. A family friend invited us to join the Salmon derby because he was one of the contestants there. One contestant got disqualified when he was caught using more than one rod and reel while on derby participation. At least we had fun that day.

At the Salmon Derby we go to, I don't hear much about the actual fishing, but it's a great chance for my wife's family to visit and get caught up on news, etc.

The meal itself is good, but it always surprises me how many people line up for a baked potato and some breaded deep-fried salmon.

One year I saw Steven Harper there before he became Prime Minister of Canada.
